Cambodia!

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Now if that’s not a feel good photo, I don’t know what is! Carrie Crawford, Librarian at Northbridge International School of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, sent this in! I think it’s one of my favorite pictures ever.

The kids in the library use BrainPOP all the time for finding information on their Units of Inquiry, playing games, taking the quizzes, watching the movies or just having fun. I will have to tell you, it is almost like a reward for them - “Can we play BrainPOP?” Currently we only have 6 computers and it is always a mad rush to see who is going to get there first. Our internet connections in Cambodia sometimes leave a lot to be desired but most days we are able to log on and “play”.

Using BrainPOP internationally? Give us a sneak peek and let us know how you’re using it! And if any US BrainPOP users are looking for a class in Cambodia to be pen pals with, you can reach out to Carrie.

This totally made my day!

I want to thank you for the webinar last Wedneday. It was filled with helpful and useful information. I couldn’t wait to share with our librarian, Margaret Frick.

Today she used the quiz with few different grade levels. The tip of having the students show which answer they pick by moving to a different corner worked really well.

Looking forward to the next webinar.

Handmade Moby

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

So fun to receive photos and notes like this from creative teachers! What a fantastic way to generate excitement among students AND teachers. Thanks for sharing, Dot!

I made the costume for Halloween and possibly for promoting Moby at Brain Pop workshops for teachers.  I am a Tech Assistant at a K-4 building.  We use BrainPop often.  The kids were very excited to see Moby in their school.  During morning announcements Moby was part of the NEWS team and made choir director motions while they sang “America”.

I spent $4.50 to buy the orange/brown shirt and a bucket for my head at Goodwill, used parts of old costumes for the sleeves and legs, and electrical tape for the stripes. The headphones were a broken pair from the lab.  I borrowed the boots from a teacher.

BrainPOP Hosts First TweetUp

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Do you tweet? BrainPOP does! We use twitter as another way to support our educators. BrainPOP tweets about featured movies, monthly spotlights, upcoming conferences, and current BrainPOP events. It is just one more way that we support a professional learning community among our users.

To meet some of our BrainPOP twitter followers, BrainPOP hosted its first ever TweetUp last week. The event was held in conjunction with the NSBA T+L conference in Denver. What’s a TweetUp? It is a chance for BrainPOP followers to develop a sense of community, by meeting one another, the BrainPOP team, and connecting. Our first TweetUp was extra special because we were able to honor two of our BrainPOP Advisors, Teryl Magee and Robert Miller for receiving the 2009 NSBA “20 to Watch” award.

Attendees learned about the event by following @brainpop on twitter. Our first TweetUp was a success. Attendees mingled with BrainPOP team members and each other. Even Moby was on hand for pictures! TweetUp attendees were treated to a special t-shirt, and encouraged to tweet throughout the event.

To be among the first to hear about local BrainPOP TweetUps and events, be sure to follow BrainPOP on twitter@brainpop .

New Student-Made, BrainPOP-Inspired Videos

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

We’re so excited! Through some BrainPOP Educators networking and inspiration, we’ve got another school that took on creating their own movies, thanks to the creative and talented collaboration between Erin Waggoner, a District Technology Integration Specialist, and teacher, PJ Burns, from Jessamine County Schools in Nicholasville, Kentucky.  Erin was kind enough to be a guest blogger and share the process. Read on!

Not to be too “A-Team” about things, but I love it when a plan comes together!  As a former classroom teacher and computer lab teacher, I understood the importance of Brain Pop and tried to utilize it a much as possible with my students.  However, when I saw Robert Miller’s Brain Pop-esque videos last spring, I knew that I was ready for the next step and I just had to implement this idea in my classroom in the fall.
