As part of the Connected Educators Month and “The First 6 Weeks” discussion, join education consultant Kate Chechak for an in-depth conversation about best practices for setting up your classroom and preparing students for a positive new year! An expert in classroom management, Kate will share detailed and effective strategies for building a strong foundation for effective learning spaces. She currently consults on curriculum development, and math and technology integration, and has served on the board of the Association for Constructivist Teaching for many years.
This webinar was very motivating to get me ready for the first month of school. I am a Special Education Teacher and teach one-to-one only for 2 hours per student, ages 3-21. It is important to be prepared and have a good relationship with my students! Connect before you correct is a very important concept and we need to be reminded of this – not just the “rules”. I do have a communication log I send home every night to keep in touch with the parents as well as monthly theme based unit letters. My Special Education students thrive on praise and hugs. The webinar was great. Ilene Morris, Bancroft School, Voorhees, NJ QueenIlene@comcast.net Thank you!!!
This webinar really made me think about how I will set-up my classroom this year. I’m going to incorporate Kate’s idea about calling all students’ families in the first two weeks with positive feedback.
I loved the idea about how to included parents in the expectations list. It is about “Connect Before You Correct”. This is truly inspired me! I am teaching hearing impaired students at my school where they mostly live out of town. It has been hard for us to be included with their parents. I will try to do about positive behavior in the first two weeks and like this idea. Kate, Thank you for the wonderful ideas!
This webinar had great ideas like greet your children with a hug, handshake, or a hi-five in the morning, plan out all routines for the year, and communicate an academic plan to families during Fall conferences.
Great webinar! New tools for my toolbox in every webinar I watch!
Kate had some really great things to say about getting ready for the first 6 weeks of school. I have already completed one year of teaching, and I know going into this year I will do a few things differently thanks to this webinar. PowerPoint presentations are definitely a great way to introduce parents to the school year!
I was very impressed with your idea to look only at positive behavior for the first two weeks. That is a very interesting and creative way to get results and set a peaceful classroom. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
This was a great webinar. I look forward to using a number of ideas with my class as well as sharing with my team. I plan on using the number system and the classroom job system. I am going to try the powerpoint at curriculum night. It might be just a few slides. I like the idea of already showing parents what is happening in class with the curriculum instead of lecturing them about it. I think I can also add some checkoff boxes to my homework sheet. Thanks again!
As usual, some great stuff. Am definitely going to try the 3-H’s…I just usually shake hands at the doorway, but I like the idea (and I am sure the students will, too) that they have a choice. Also the launching a new unit of study with a relevant book; I always seem to do this for guided reading genres, but forget the other core subjects. Thanks!
This was a great webinar, even for those who have been teaching for some time. I will be a traveling BSI Reading teacher this year, and I really liked the section during the training that talked about staying organized. From this, I think I will color code the classrooms that I will visit, it will help me keep everything in order for each classroom.
This was my first webinar and I really loved it. There were plenty of great ideas I’d like to use, as this school year I will be a class teacher (haven’t done that for a couple of years). I’ve taught French in my school for 7 years.
I took notes and I thought of something I could use in my school on the very first day. In the “Connect before you correct” kind of ideas, I will have the children (grade 5) sit on the carpet around a globe and each of them will introduce himself/herself (I work in an international school), talking about the country they come from, spotting it on the globe. We might use the “Me” bag as well, even though my students might be a bit too old for that. I look forward to putting all that I’ve learned tonight (yes, here it’s the night) into practice next week. Thanks again !
This was a great webinar. I was encouraged by ideas that I had already decided to put into place this summer; like numbering the computers and then letting the students sit in the assigned seat for the number that their teacher has already given them. And of course to practice the routines specifically over and over. I came into the lab last year, after school had already started and the top 10 just clarifies what I plan to do for this year! Thanks!!
I enjoyed this webinar. I will use the numbering idea for sure. The exprectations handout is a wonderful idea. I look forward to sharing these ideas with other teachers at my school.
I enjoyed the entire webinar! I will e utilizing the idea of having an expectation set up per grade for my technology lab! I will also be sharing some of the ideas with my fellow co-workers especially the new teachers!
Thank you so much for a wonderful workshop!
I can’t wait to try the Curriculum Night ideas.
I really enjoyed this webinar. I am not a classroom teacher, but I am a media specialist and I am in contact with first year classroom teachers who could use some resources to help them with their classroom management and organization. I especially liked the idea of using a book to kick off a subject area. This will allow me to support the teachers in the classroom.
As a student teacher this semester, I learned so many helpful tips and ideas for my future classroom through this webinar. I hope to implement the parent/students’ expectations in my onw classroom. I also took notes of everything and in particular Assess & Plan for differentiation because I think instruction is driven from that. It is equally important to set up your classroom culture and have students involved in its creation. In that way, they will be accountable for their own learning. This was a terrific webinar!
This webinar was great. I took notes through all of what Kate was saying and plan on sharing with my fellow teachers. I especially liked the emphasis on getting to know your students and curriculum night. I know that this information will help me out this school year!
Perfect timing for the beginning of school. Lots of great ideas for setting expectations!
This was a great webinar. The top 10 has greatly reduced much anxiety over my first class! I loved the idea of having the students help set up the classroom. Also, the picture books for SEL and subject introductions.
Kate had many good ideas. I particularly liked the written homework newsletters and the use of PowerPoint in back-to-school night presentations.
This was a great webinar. Kate presents an easy to understand top 10 list of things you can do to help the rest of your year run smoothly. Her strategies range from those of creating classroom culture to organizing materials to interacting with parents and even organizing your teacher team for the upcoming year. I’m excited to try a new concept called “Connect Before You Correct.” Got some great ideas…..Definitely worth checking out!
