This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Dialogue, and supports the standard of using dialogue to show characters’ response to situations. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display a snippet of written dialogue, like this one from the movie (timestamp: 1:26):

Ask students:

  • How can you tell who’s speaking?
  • How can dialogue develop a story’s characters? 

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read the description on the Dialogue topic page.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding. 
  • Have students read one of the following Related Reading articles: “Did You Know?” or “Quotables.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Students take the Dialogue Challenge and Quiz, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about dialogue while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce an interview with a fictional character using dialogue to highlight elements of their personality. 
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map analyzing examples of one character’s dialogue in a book or movie. Identify how the dialogue contributes to the character development. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a comic in which dialogue reveals how two characters react differently in a stressful situation.
