Nobel Prize for Medicine Awarded for Discoveries in Cell Transportation!

Posted by Andrew Gardner on

This morning, professors James Rothman, Randy Schekman, and Thomas C. Suedhof became the latest recipients of Nobel Prize in Medicine!  They received the award for their work detailing how a cell’s transporters navigate and drop off hormones and other molecules.  This work is about the very basis of life and informs research about immune disorders, neurological problems, and more. It’s fascinating, but can be difficult to explain to students!

BrainPOP is a great place to find explanations and help students understand the work of the prize winners!  Start by browsing our science unit “cellular life and genetics.”  We have a topic page about cells in general and a number of more specific topic pages explaining the exact area these doctors are researching –  active transport, passive transport, cellular respiration and more.  Have your students watch the movies and then read about the research of the Rothman, Schekman and Suedhof.  How would your students update the BrainPOP movies to incorporate the latest discoveries?

We’d love to hear how you’re using the BrainPOP cellular life videos and GameUp games to explain today’s developments with your students. Be in touch!
