Educator Resources for Addition Blocks
AdditionBlocks is a fun, fast-paced game that challenges students to increase addition speed and accuracy. Winner of the 2012 STEM Video Game Challenge, AdditionBlocks features multiple speeds and difficulty levels that will help learners of varying ages. To rack up points, students must destroy falling sum blocks by clicking on connecting digit blocks that add up to the sum. But add fast, or the sum blocks will stack up! The game features more than 20 achievements, unlockable special blocks, and hidden levels. It's a great way to introduce and reinforce basic adding, repeated addition, the commutative and associative properties of addition, and even basic multiplication.
In this lesson plan which is adaptable for grades 1-5, students use BrainPOP resources (including a free online interactive game) to practice combining numbers to create target amounts. Students will apply a variety of mental math strategies as they add during online game play, as well as in a hands-on addition game they create with a partner. This lesson plan is aligned to Common Core State Standards. See more »
