Comparing Prices Lesson Plan: Ratios and Proportions

Prompt students to discuss the following real-world problem:
A pizza parlor is selling an 8-slice pie for $12, or single slices for $2 each. Is it a better deal to buy slices or a whole pie? How do you know?

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS

Students express what they learned about comparing prices while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

- Make-a-Map: Identify the steps to solve the following problem: You want to book a bike tour. Company A charges $18 per hour per person, and Company B charges $50 per person for three hours. Company B also charges each person $5 for a helmet, whereas Company A includes helmets for free. Which company offers the better deal?
- Creative Coding: Code a math problem that involves comparing prices.
