This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Logic Gates, and supports the standard of describing ways to store data. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Display an image of a logic gate and a truth table, like this one:

Ask students: What do you think is happening?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read aloud the description on the Logic Gates topic page.
  • Play the Movie, pausing to check for understanding.
  • Assign Related Reading. Have students read one of the following articles: “Famous Faces” or “Quirky Stuff.”Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Assign Logic Gates Challenge and Quiz, prompting students to apply essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about logic gates while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.

  • Make-a-Movie: Produce a commercial for a home security system that explains how logic gates protect different areas. 
  • Make-a-Map: Make a concept map that identifies and uses examples to describe how different logic gates function. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a sorting game challenging players to determine which logic gate would create a specific output from given inputs. 
  • Primary Source Activity: Analyze the letter and cite evidence to answer the accompanying questions.
