BrainPOP ESL | Infinitives | A High Probability

Have you checked out BrainPOP ESL lately? If so, you may have noticed our new content: Level 3, Unit 4! We are excited to announce the launch of this new unit, which brings BrainPOP ESL up to 80 specific lessons! In addition to exploring higher level grammatical concepts, the movies are also increasingly content-driven – a development that can help all students. Take, for example, “A High Probability” (Level 3, Unit 4, Lesson 3). This BrainPOP ESL topic page focuses on infinitive verbs, but also explains the mathematical concept of probability. Learners essentially get two lessons in one. Beyond the new content, BrainPOP ESL has new features too. “Words to Know,” the all-important word introduction feature accompanying each lesson, now includes “Word Connections.” “Word Connections” explains various verb forms in the classic visual, clear style you’ve come to expect from BrainPOP. Powerful new reading and writing extension activities highlight specific forms of written expression. Within “A High Probability,” the “Read It” activity invites students to explore a persuasive essay, with thoughtful multiple choice comprehension questions that engage readers. New Topic Page: Hiroshima and Nagasaki

August 13, 2012

Peace memorial

You’ve come to expect BrainPOP movies to explain concepts and ideas with clarity, depth and respect. These qualities are especially important when explaining complex and sensitive topics, such as September 11th, the death of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Holocaust.  These difficult topics are also some of the most popular on BrainPOP, because they are difficult to explain concisely. Educators have come to realize that using the BrainPOP movie as an entry point to a conversation gives everyone a common reference point and a language by which to have meaningful dialogue. Our newest topic, Hiroshima and Nagasaki addresses America’s complicated and controversial action of dropping nuclear bombs in Japan during World War II.  Regardless of your opinion about the actions, this movie gives a clear and concise history sharing the unfortunate details and consequences while also addressing the possibilities for what could have happened had the bombs not been dropped. This topic crosses traditional “subject” areas by touching on the history, the science and the social effects of the event. The pensive and thoughtful movie can be a great resource when your students ask questions about World War II or nuclear catastrophe.

Using BrainPOP for test prep

May 27, 2012

Moby Test

As the end of the school year approaches, students need to review lots of material they’ve already learned. Why not use BrainPOP to help? In this new lesson plan, you’ll find ideas for helping students reflect on their progress and areas of strength and weakness, and review key skills and concepts. This lesson can be used in preparation for standardized testing or even unit tests in various subject areas. Preview the lesson and determine how you can adapt it for your class and differentiate for student needs. If your students have mobile devices, you may want to teach them in advance how to download the BrainPOP app. You may want to re-use this lesson plan throughout the school year for different subject area assessments. Encourage students to explore the movies and quizzes on their own, and check out topics that are relevant to their interests (including those topics that are not covered on a test.)
