Charlie Brown on BrainPOP?

May 24, 2012

Screen Shot 2012-05-21 at 3.16.03 PM

Well, no, not really,  but two of our recently introduced topics to BrainPOP’s ever expanding library seem to reference everyone’s favorite “good man.”  Based on Bailey’s letter requesting an explanation of Cerebral Palsy, Tim’s answer touches on the various neurological, muscular and affective effects on people with the condition. Be sure to watch all the way to the end of the baseball themed movie for Tim’s deadpan “good grief!” You’ll find another “good greif” moment, beginning the Railroad History movie as Moby slams a locomotive into Tim’s house! Fortunately nobody is hurt so settle in to hear about engineering progress from horse drawn wagon ways, to bullet trains.  We also learn about the cultural impact that came with the worldwide growth of the railroad industry from the Transcontinental Railroad to the Orient Express.    Though Charlie Brown isn’t really on BrainPOP, his presence influences all kinds of animation, including our own!

Guest Blogger Kristin Kowalski on IPads, Autism and BrainPOP

Kristin Kowalski's students

A few weeks ago I was combing the web for information about BrainPOP and came across a mention of Kristin Kowalski, an arts teacher from Ohio.  I reached out to see what she had to say about using BrainPOP with her students, she sent us the following:   First let me say how much I love BrainPOP. I teach K-8 art at a school for ADD, ADHD, Autism, learning disabled and behavioral students, we currently have 180 kids that attend our school. Prior to the BrainPOP app, I incorporated the art videos and lessons into my classroom frequently and I know the other classroom teachers use the other subjects sections. I was excited to get the BrainPOP app.   I received a grant to get 12 iPads to work with my students with autism and I conducted a study of the affects of the iPads in art for my students, mainly addressing their sensory needs, engagement levels and understanding the content being taught. I had incredible success with the iPads not only with artistic processes but understand the artistic concepts. The BrainPOP app works great for teaching about the art history, processes and concepts. I would put the students on the app in the art… Read the Rest»

New BrainPOP Movie: The Titanic!

April 3, 2012

Screen Shot 2012-03-30 at 11.35.42 AM

They said the Titanic was practically unsinkable…but it sank to the bottom of the ocean four days into its first voyage. Watch the BrainPOP Titanic movie on the most famous shipwreck in history, learn exactly how big this behemoth of a ship was, and how an iceberg was able to bring it down. You’ll see how Titanic was a product of its period, a high point of faith in technology and scientific progress. You’ll discover why a ship this large was built in the first place, and hear about some of the amenities that made it the floating equivalent of a four-star hotel. Finally, you’ll hear about the major changes to maritime safety made after the Titanic went down. It’s the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s maiden voyage! So put on the closest Celine Dion CD and take a ride with Tim and Moby as they set sail for… well, disaster.

It just keeps on coming. Last week we continued padding out the Arts and Technology section of BrainPOP Jr. with topic pages on Pablo Picasso and Georgia O’Keeffe.  This week check out the new mathematics content with the debut of combinations, in which Annie creates a useful grid to count the number of combinations she can make in her school lunch combo meal!  Will she choose an apple and pasta or a sandwich and pear?  Be sure to tune in and find out!  Continuing with the tantalizing food theme, take a look at how Annie uses repeated subtraction to help her divide a chewy, gooey eight slice pizza between her and Moby. Let us know your thoughts about our new topic pages, we love hearing from you!

Georgia O'Keeffe

BrainPOP is always growing! Whether we’re adding new topics to BrainPOP, sharing our favorite educational games on GameUp or a building new levels on BrainPOP ESL, we’re hard at work curating and creating the best content to share with students.  So what’s been happening recently? Well, this week, we have 2 premieres!  Young artists will enjoy BrainPOPJr’s perspective on Georgia O’Keeffe and Pablo Picasso, while writers will be set straight by checking out the newest BrianPOP topic on Parallel Structure.  On GameUp, our newest games include: Employee Cafeteria, Employee Lounge, and Mine Shaft all from Maryland Public TV’s Lure of the Labyrinth project. Just a few weeks ago BrainPOP ESL announced the debut the first unit in level three, bringing the total number of lessons to 65!  We do our best to create content that will help you and the students who love it. But, as always, we want to hear from you! Please share any suggestions you may have in our educators forum.
