Assessment Games: A Design Challenge!

With the rise in popularity of games based learning, we are hearing more and more about game based assessment.  Though we believe that students learn a great deal and exercise their “problem solving” muscles from playing well designed games, it’s a hard thing to quantify!  In response to this challenge, many organizations are supporting research and development endeavors and are looking to you, expert educators, for guidance. Specifically, ETS,  designers of the SAT, the GRE and the AP examinations is pleased to announce the official launch of the ETS Assessment Games Design Challenge!  ETS is encouraging game developers and educators to create a math assessment task in the form of a game. One grand prize winner will receive $7,000 and the winner and thee runners-up will receive an all-expense-paid trip to showcase the winning project in a learning and games demo space at ETS in Princeton, N.J. ETS is looking for innovative ideas that produce evidence of students’ knowledge, skills and abilities in mathematics. The assessment tasks should be based on a Learning Progression for a field of mathematics in grades K–12. West, Vice President and Director of Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution.  The paper examines how blogs, wikis, social media, mobile devices, and video games are impacting education.  West finds that these tools offer “new ways for participation, engagement, and collaboration to take place.” We were thrilled to see our partners at iCivics and Filament Games got a shout out, as well as our friends at Quest to Learn. BrainPOP & Intel: How Do YOU Bring Learning to Your Students’ Fingertips?

We’ve Updated Our Research Resources! You know we’re always trying to make life a little easier for teachers. As part of that ongoing effort, we’ve redesigned the BrainPOP Research section, enhancing its offerings and making it even easier to navigate. Explore research and white papers relating to the integration and design of BrainPOP. There’s a science-based effectiveness study as well as relevant articles from outlets like theJournal of Educational Computing. Read about the use of multimedia in K-12 education and review case studies that demonstrate the ways teachers are using our resources. It’s all here! Winter 2012 Classroom Improvement Technology Grant

BrianPOP is pleased to partner with Samsung and the Turning Foundation to sponsor the Classroom Improvement Technology Grant. The purpose of this grant is to help educators develop 21st century classrooms and improve achievement by providing technology tools from multiple, industry leading companies. By assembling a package of technology-based classroom supports, we hope to improve achievement and the overall success of students and teachers in the classroom.Grant applications will be accepted from teachers in grades K-12 who are currently teaching in an accredited, non-profit school building in the United States. Ten (10) classroom awards estimated at $3,600 each will be distributed. So what are you waiting for?  Apply for the grant by Feb 15th and good luck!
