Educator Resources for Blood Typing

Play Game

Through this online game, students learn the basics of human blood types and blood typing, and why they’re so important. Students’ challenge is to save patients in urgent need of blood transfusions by deciding what blood type they belong to in order to administer safe blood transfusions. Talk with students about what happens if a person gets a blood transfusion with the wrong blood type, and what happens when a patient’s own blood type is not available at the blood bank.

Grades: 9-12

In this lesson plan which is adaptable for grades 9-12, students use BrainPOP resources (including an online game) to differentiate between blood group and blood type. Students will explore how antigens and antibodies affect blood type, identify the number of blood types that exist and their differences, and investigate the reaction of two incompatible blood cells in a transfusion.
