Welcome to PBL. Let’s start by saying hello. Tell us who you are, where you are, and what you have experienced about PBL.

I am Lisa Parisi. I teach elementary school on Long Island in NY. I have been running a PBL classroom for a few years now, incorporating collaborators as much as possible. I love using BrainPop as a resource when I make lists of resources for the children to access while researching a topic. It’s always a great place to start and the extras that go with each video really add depth.

I love that BrainPOP Jr. has a recommended reading list. Its like, now that each student is excited about a certain topic, they can continue research beyond what BrainPOP offers.

Hi! I’m Eligio, 2nd Grade teacher in Texas. I was wondering if you could please give me PBL ideas for a unit in Work and the Free Enterprise System? Thanks.

Hello, Mares823. The best thing to do is to start with your essential questions. What is it you want the children to come out with in your unit? Once you have this information, the project ideas tend to follow. If you want, post your essential questions and we can work from there. For example, do you want them to understand supply and demand? What exactly should they know about supply and demand?

    Good luck!

@mares823 I second the call for generating essential questions. We also used to generate “enduring understandings,” short phrases in semi kid friendly language that describe what you hope students learn through the project. i.e: “a productive economy is based on trading goods and services.” Of course that leads to many questions, i.e.: what is an economy? What are goods? What are services?” We would write them out on sentence strips and hang them around the room. Creating projects that help kids understand what these enduring understandings mean is the fun stuff!
