Is there a specific topic that helped your special education students? How and why?

Most of the students in my class are in 4th grade and are going on a field trip soon. For social science their standard is to learn about California history and we are going to pan for “gold” on our trip. I haven’t had too much time to spend on the topic (I teach 2-5) so I used BrianPop’s movie on the Gold Rush. I used the activity and had them take notes which involved defining the vocabulary words. The kids really liked the video and the quiz. I got to tie in writing, social science, and group work in one activity. I think they respond well to the video because it’s visually appealing and not too long yet is full of useful and interesting content. I really like the fact that the movies are short because this helps with many of my students who have A.D.H.D.

@mswhitfords – I agree! One of the most appealing aspects to BrainPOP movies is their brevity. By keeping the videos short, they respect one of the most precious commodities, time!
