Grade Levels: 3-5, 6-8, K-3

In the BrainPOP ELL movie Who Had the Keys? (L1U6L5) we follow Ben and Moby as they retrace their steps in an effort to find the lost house keys. In this lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, students use the past simple tense to ask and answer questions about the movie, and sequence the events in the movie.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. When and Where. For a repeated viewing of the movie Who Had the Keys? (L1U6L5), tell students to pay attention to where and when things happen in the movie. Working in pairs, have students write at least three questions about the movie (without the answers). Partners then pair up to form groups of four and ask each other the questions they wrote down.

For example: When did Ben and Moby come home from school? Who opened the door?
  2. Sequence the Story. Distribute index cards to pairs of students or groups of four. Instruct students to identify the steps Ben and Moby took to find the keys. Have them write each step on a different card and then place the cards in sequential order, according to the movie.

Once each group has completed that step, continue the activity by having each pair or group remove one or two of their cards and move to the next table. Each new pair/group now examines the incomplete sequence of events. Which steps are missing? They write the missing steps on blank cards, and place them at the right points in the sequence.
