Online Safety with Kerpoof Lesson Plan: Understanding When to Ask for Parental Permission

Submitted by: Ellen Budish, FL

Grade Levels: 3-5, K-3

In this Online Safety lesson plan, which is adaptable for grades K-5, students use BrainPOP Jr. and/or BrainPOP resources to explore the importance of online and real world safety. Students will create an account on Kerpoof at home with a trusted adult, and explain how they became members of Kerpoof (and the trusted adult that helped them).

Students will:

  1. Understand the importance of online and real world safety
  2. Create an account on KERPOOF at home with a trusted adult
  3. Explain how they (and the trusted adult that helped them) became members of KERPOOF

  • Computer with internet access for BrainPOP
  • Interactive whiteboard (or just an LCD projector)

Preview BrainPOP's Online Safety movie and BrainPOP Jr.'s Internet Safety movie to determine which is more appropriate for your students. You should also create your own Kerpoof Educators account and familiarize yourself with the tools available on Kerpoof's free site.

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Show the BrainPOP or BrainPOP Jr. movie on online/internet safety. Be sure to turn on the closed captioning to help students process the information.
  2. Review the information from the movie using the related quiz and activity features. Guide students to recall that they should ask an adult to help them create login names and passwords for any websites they use.
  3. Project the Kerpoof website for the class to see and demonstrate some of the cool things students can do with the site. Explain that students will have the opportunity to explore the site after they ask a trusted adult at home to help them create a username/login like they learned on BrainPOP. Assign this task as homework.
  4. The following day, encourage students to share how they created their Kerpoof accounts. Be sure to emphasize the importance of keeping their login usernames and passwords private. Have students also share what they did on Kerpoof and what their plans are for utilizing more of the site's resources. If possible, Provide some class time for this so that you can assist students and facilitate their thinking and problem solving.
