In BrainPOP ELL’s first movie, Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1), Ben introduces students to his friends using subject pronouns, and the verb to be and its contractions. In this subject pronouns lesson plan, adaptable for grades K-8, ELL/ESL students practice identifying and matching subject pronouns to images through various physical and choral activities.

Lesson Plan Common Core State Standards Alignments

Students will:

  1. Identify subject pronouns with physical and oral responses.
  2. Match subject pronouns to their appropriate images.

Materials:

Vocabulary:

I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they

Preparation:

Gather images that illustrate the different pronouns. Make sure to have multiple examples for he and she, it, and they (all masculine, all feminine, and mixed).

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Identify Pronouns. Watch the Pronouns section of Grammar from the movie Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1). During a repeated viewing, invite volunteers to the front of the class and instruct them to point to classmates to illustrate each pronoun, after Ben does. Differentiate instruction for an extra challenge by showing the Grammar section from Hi, I’m Ben (L1U1L1) without sound or closed captioning. Instruct students to say the pronouns instead of Ben.
  2. Pronoun Practice. Use the Images of the Four Characters, as well as additional images, to practice pronouns. Possible activities range from whole-group choral participation to physical responses, and finally to individual oral responses. Suggestions include: show the images and have the class shout out the pronouns; line up the images and ask individuals to point to the pronoun you say; or invite individuals to respond orally to the image prompts.   3. Matching Pronouns. On a pocket chart or the board, play a matching or memory game with cards of the pronouns and pictures that go with them.
