Our K-3 resource has been named the winner of a 2013 ON for Learning Award from Common Sense Media! The ON for Learning Awards celebrate the best digital media products for kids. BrainPOP Jr. is one of just 50 apps, web sites, and games to be honored this year. Common Sense Media is dedicated to providing families with reliable information about media and technology; some of you may recognize the organization as one of our GameUp partners. Their ON for Learning Award winners are chosen based on the results of an intensive evaluation framework. Read what they had to say about BrainPOP Jr. We’re thrilled about this honor! Feel free to spread the good news by test driving our newly minted SHARE button, which you’ll see at the bottom of this post,

Our thoughts are with all of you affected by Hurricane Sandy – may our return to normalcy be safe and quick. We know how many teachers and students are out of school and house-bound this stormy week, and we’d like to help make life at least a bit easier for you. All BrainPOP resources – including BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP Español, and BrainPOP ESL – will be completely FREE through the weekend. Help explain the catastrophic weather with topics like Hurricanes, Floods, Natural Disasters, and, on BrainPOP Jr., Fast Land Changes. Explore any other topic the kids might be interested in. Or take the titles on GameUp for a spin (our online games portal is always free). We’re here for you! As you may have read on Twitter, our headquarters in New York are without power as of October 30th, and our servers are down. We’re doing our best to assist and respond to our subscribers remotely, but we hope you’ll be patient with us over the next few days.

Guest Blogger: Assessing 1st Graders with BrainPOP Jr.

May 26, 2011

Christine Yarzabek’s first grade classroom is a technology integration playground where her students can frequently be found on the SmartBoard, performing research scavenger hunts on their computers, interviewing each other with Flip cameras or practicing for spelling tests on a host of different websites. You can visit her personal blog or follow her on twitter @CYarzy. BrainPOP Jr.  has become an important part of my first grade classroom.  When I first started using it, about four years ago, I strictly showed the video clip and we took the quiz together with the use of our Promethean voting eggs (clickers).  Now…I find myself assessing my students with BrainPOP Jr. in an entirely different way.  We are constantly assessing in our district; whether it be DIBELS, spelling tests, weekly comprehension tests, math tests, and the list goes on and on.  This year, I have found myself assessing my students through BrainPOP in multiples subjects.  Here are some examples of activities I have done with my first graders.
