Wounded Knee Massacre

On the morning of December 29, 1890, a detachment of U.S. troops opened fire on a band of hungry, ragged Sioux Indians near Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota. It was one of the darkest events in American history. And in this BrainPOP movie, Tim and Moby explain exactly how and why this tragedy occurred. You’ll discover how decades of broken promises destroyed the traditional Sioux way of life during the late 19th century. You’ll also learn how a new religious movement called the Ghost Dance brought new hope to the Sioux--and why this scared the U.S. government. Finally, you’ll hear about the events that led directly to the massacre.
