Grade Levels: K-3

These classroom activities are designed to complement the Georgia O’Keeffe topic on BrainPOP Jr.

Color Theory
Invite students to use colors to communicate a mood. Have them choose a mood and create an artwork that conveys it. Encourage them to choose feelings and idea that are more complex, such as confusion or nervousness. Then have other students observe each other’s work and interpret what mood the artwork conveys. Instead of having the artist give the “answer,” allow a more freeform discussion about the work to help students understand that art can be interpreted in many different ways, regardless of what the original intention or goal is. Is there such thing as a right or wrong way to interpret art? Guide children to understand the importance of allowing different perspectives.

Close-Up

Remind students that Georgia O’Keeffe painted close-ups of flowers to help people see them in a new, refreshing way. Have students paint a close-up view of a subject of their choice. Encourage them to be creative! Guide students to pay attention to the point-of-view of the painting and observe their subjects from different spots as they explore and experiment. You may want to provide magnifying lenses for children to examine their objects in more detail.
