This lesson accompanies the BrainPOP topic Writing in Sequence, and supports the standard of writing with clear event sequences and a logical flow of ideas. Students demonstrate understanding through a variety of projects.

Step 1: ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prompt students to state a clear sequence of events. Ask:

  • What are the steps for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Step 2: BUILD KNOWLEDGE

  • Read aloud the description on the Writing in Sequence topic page
  • Play the Movie, activating the Pause Points to check for understanding. 
  • Have students read one of the following Related Reading articles: “Arts and Entertainment” or “Careers.” Partner them with someone who read a different article to share what they learned with each other.

Step 3: APPLY and ASSESS 

Students take the Writing in Sequence Quiz, applying essential literacy skills while demonstrating what they learned about this topic.

Step 4: DEEPEN and EXTEND

Students express what they learned about writing in sequence while practicing essential literacy skills with one or more of the following activities. Differentiate by assigning ones that meet individual student needs.  

  • Make-a-Movie: Create a movie that responds to this prompt: Describe the events of your school day using transition words to connect ideas
  • Make-a-Map: Identify the steps to doing a dance, playing a game, or cooking a recipe. 
  • Creative Coding: Code a comic that includes an action sequence with at least two steps.
