{"synopsis":"Viruses are the culprits behind the common cold, the flu, COVID-19, rabies, AIDS, and all kinds of other illnesses. But making us sick isn\u2019t their goal. They have only one mission, and that\u2019s to make more viruses. Viruses are extremely simple\u2014they\u2019re just a package of instructions for making copies of themselves. The trouble is, they don\u2019t have the equipment they need to carry out those instructions. So, viruses swindle cells into doing their bidding. They make their way into the cells of all sorts of organisms, from amoebas to elephants. Once they\u2019re in, they feed those instructions\u2014their genetic material\u2014into the cell\u2019s machinery. The cells do as they\u2019re told, and crank out viruses. But this takes a toll on the organism\u2019s body. Fortunately, humans and other animals have immune systems, collections of cells specialized for stopping invaders.
