The scientific method might seem like a rigid series of steps for scientists to follow. But it's only one part of the scientific process, which is much more open-ended! Making sense of nature's mysteries requires creativity, collaboration, and lots of persistence. It often starts with an interesting observation that prompts scientists to ask questions about the world around them. To answer those questions, they propose a hypothesis, an explanation that doesn't yet have much evidence. To test the hypothesis, they design experiments. Sometimes the results support the hypothesis, and sometimes they rule it out. That gives scientists a chance to ask new questions, propose new hypotheses, and design new experiments to gather more evidence. Conclusions are published in peer-reviewed papers, which have been checked by other scientists for accuracy. If a hypothesis gains enough support, it becomes known as a theory. The process is a lot like detective work, full of twists and turns and unexpected discoveries.
