Every summer, the people known as the Mexica celebrated the queen of the underworld with parades, feasts, and shrines. When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, they tried to outlaw these customs. But instead of disappearing, the traditions merged with similar Catholic practices and continue to live on! Today, Mexican families still welcome the dead with decorated altars called \u003Ci\u003Eofrendas\u003C\/i\u003E, and enjoy popular foods like \u003Ci\u003Epan de muertos\u003C\/i\u003E (a glazed sweet roll) and \u003Ci\u003Ecalaveritas\u003C\/i\u003E (skull-shaped candies)!
