The Citizen Science Game is now on GameUp
Citizen Science is a unique science game that combines practice in literacy skills with the exploration of environmental issues. During the game, students take on the role of a teen who must uncover and solve specific pollution problems faced by a local lake. Students practice their persuasive writing skills through the creation of evidence-based arguments, and use models and simulations of scientific data collection to learn about the factors that influence lake health. Perhaps most importantly, the game helps students gain an understanding of how citizens can make positive changes to their communities.
View our teacher support and assessment resources video to get a quick overview of the resources we’ve made available for the game, along with some ideas for assessing student learning before, during, and after game play. Our lesson ideas page also provides a Citizen Science lesson plan and a full teacher’s guide with additional activities and learning materials.
If your students have signed up for individual logins through My BrainPOP, they’ll be able to take snapshots during Citizen Science game play. The SnapThought tool allows students to capture significant moments in their gameplay with opportunities for brief written reflection. You can use our list of suggested SnapThought prompts for Citizen Science to guide students in using this tool.
