Ok, what is all of the buzz about new standards adoption?  Well, if you haven’t heard, 44 states across our nation have officially adopted the Common Core State Standards.  If you are in one of these 44 states, get ready because the standards are set to roll out during the 2012-2013 school year.   The National Governors Association and State Education Chiefs launched the standards last year in an effort to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. Greetings from BrainPOP HQ here in NYC! My name is Andrew Gardner and I’m the newest member of the BrainPOP Educators team. As a seasoned school teacher, I’m excited to join Allisyn, Angela, Jessica, Kari and Karina, to continue building our educator community. Prior to my work here at BrainPOP, I was an elementary teacher for six years and a technology integrator for another six. I have a passion for using technology in non-traditional ways to help students build self awareness, think systemically, and problem solve. I’m here now to tackle a big challenge: create a vibrant and engaging online community that helps you become a more effective educator. Have you checked out our new GameUp offerings? Game-based learning adds a new way to engage students, and we’re so excited about the expanding collection of educational games here at BrainPOP! BrainPOP Educators is looking for high quality lesson plans that include the use of BrainPOP and GameUp to help students learn in meaningful ways. We encourage you to play the full range of games we offer and determine how they fit into your curriculum. Try them out with your students, and then submit a lesson plan sharing your ideas! We’ll be selecting three GameUp lesson plans submitted during the months of September and October to highlight in an upcoming blog post. Kids across the nation are returning to classrooms this fall. In many schools, they’ll discover increased access to mobile learning devices. This portable technology will undoubtedly change the way that they approach learning, solve problems, collaborate, and communicate.
