Intuitively, our capacity to understand, compromise, and foster positive relationships with others should be greatly enhanced by our ability to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes."
In edWeb.net's next webinar, researchers from Harvard's Graduate School of Education will share the results of a series of studies they conducted on using a game-based virtual environment and negotiation exercise. Harvard Doctoral Candidates Geoff Marietta and Elisabeth Hahn will present their findings, which show that walking around in someone else's (virtual) shoes does indeed encourage compromise and facilitate more positive relationships.
In addition, they will explore how these studies shed light on the vast potential for game-based virtual environments to improve the many different types of relationships found in education: student-student, teacher-student, family-school, or central office-school.
Join Geoff and Elisabeth on April 11th to learn about game-based approaches for helping your students develop more positive relationships.
Drs. Karen Trujillo and Barbara Chamberlin of New Mexico State University introduce Math Snacks, a collection of games and animations designed to address math learning gaps in grades 5-7. Walk away with easy-to-implement strategies and access to support materials sure to take the math-related game play in your classroom up a notch.
Integrating technology while meeting the daily demands of a curriculum can be difficult for educators. In the second of her three-part series with us, POPstar Lisa Parisi shares tips and tricks for getting the job done. She’ll share strategies that work in any setting, whether your classroom has minimal technology or the set-up of your dreams. You'll leave this webinar feeling inspired to meaningfully incorporate technology and improve your everyday lessons.
Rescheduled from January: Join us as we explore multiple intelligences and highlight the ways you can use netTrekker Search and BrainPOP to develop corresponding learning paths. netTrekker’s learning architects and BrainPOP Educators will provide you with a portfolio full of strategies for addressing the different intelligences in your classroom, from spatial to auditory and every intelligence in between.

Social emotional learning is at the core of what many teachers love about their profession - from helping children navigate friendships to dealing with difficult topics and feelings a large group. Joining us today are Marc Zimmerman and Tamara Green of Social Express, a web-based social learning environment. They’ll discuss the value of social emotional learning and identify great resources for building students’ skills in this area.
Put on your virtual “mukluks,” zip up the parka, and join us on an experiential learning adventure along the Iditarod Trail. Diane Johnson, Iditarod Education Director and race staff member, shares the breadth of lessons and activities available on the teachers section of the Iditarod web site (www.iditarod.com/teachers). Aligned to national standards and the Common Core, they’re designed to help learners experience the event in real time.
Out of habit, today’s students regularly turn to popular search engines for their school research -- often overlooking valuable library resources. So how do we teach them proper research skills in this digital age? We’ll welcome the team from EasyBib.com for a jointly hosted webinar discussing recent studies on the strengths and weaknesses of student research skills and the habits of EasyBib’s 40 million users.
Get a sneak peek at a groundbreaking new title from leading games creator Second Avenue Learning! They’re currently at work on a collaborative, multi-player game designed to teach middle school physical science. Players work together while exploring, scaffolding and scoring rewards for solving missions. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to help shape the game’s final design!
Are you trying to close the rift between traditional classroom practice and the hyper "click, tap and swipe" learning innate in your students? Even once we grasp the inherent value in these tools, it can be difficult to find connections to the curriculum, classroom management advice, and examples of what the learning looks like. Join edWeb.net on February 19th when Laurence Cocco interviews Peggy Sheehy about using WoW in School as an arena for quest-based learning. Peggy will tell us about her journey with Lucas Gillispie of Pender County Schools hosting a hybrid, collaborative literacy program using World of Warcraft to engage youth in learning. After one year as an after-school program, their WoW in School project was refined, aligned to national core standards for English language arts (ELA), and introduced into the regular academic day. We’ll hear the steps taken to bring massively multiplayer online games into the classroom and how the "hidden curriculum" in games has provided opportunities for students to master real world skills that often elude traditional leaning environments. Peggy and Laurence also will provide practical ideas for leveraging the unique properties of video games for your teaching and a step-by-step protocol to establish a similar program in your school. Join them on February 19th to explore the WoW in School Hero's Journey curriculum and find out about joining the Cognitive Dissonance Guild, the educator network inside World of Warcraft.

These factors should be considered when designing or evaluating games for the classroom. Join Victoria Van Voorhis, founder and CEO of Second Avenue Software, and Jayne C. Lammers, Assistant Professor, University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education for edWeb.net’s new webinar to learn how to incorporate games into your curriculum to engage all of your students. The learning games movement has blossomed from infancy into…an awkward teen. Learning games are no longer a novelty, but they’re still far from reaching mainstream status (and their full potential). As the movement gains momentum and new products hit the market, it becomes increasingly difficult to separate hyperbole from quality. The result is a complicated landscape that’s difficult for educators to navigate. In edWeb.net's next webinar, Filament Games CEO Dan White and educator Tammie Schrader will offer guidance and inspiration for teachers who are trying to add more game-based learning to their classrooms. Leveraging a decade of experience, Dan will offer a jungle-safari-style tour of the learning games space, detailing the myriad forces (assessment, economics, competing design philosophies, etc.) that are shaping it. Tammie will then offer a best-practices-oriented, first-hand account of her experience integrating learning games into a classroom curriculum. Join Dan and Tammie on December 6th to learn the why and how of game-based learning.

Students and adults of all ages enjoy playing games. Some games offer players the opportunities to illustrate and reinforce mathematical concepts while also encouraging and enhancing mathematical reasoning and sense-making. In developing an optimal strategy, game-players engage beyond content and develop processes and proficiencies, as outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Join Sarah DeLeeuw and Patrick Vennebush from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics on August 28th to discuss how two simple games, Tic-Tac-Toe and the Game of Nine Cards, lend serious educational value for students of all ages and teachers too! They will facilitate a conversation motivated by articles from NCTM’s three school journals that will focus on differentiation, discourse, strategic competence, and reasoning and sense-making. You will be invited to play along as they demonstrate with both paper-based versions and technological tools, such as an online activity from Illuminations and an app for mobile devices (tablets and smart phones). Risk: Learning is fun. You may become addicted. Join Sarah and Patrick at 1 PM ET on the 28th to learn about games that encourage and enhance mathematical reasoning and sense-making.
