Guest Blog: Energetic Boost with BrainPOP Jr.

March 20, 2011

We were thrilled to hear from one of our dynamic BrainPOP educators, Karyn Keenan. She shared with us her summer funding project to bring BrainPOP Jr. into her classroom, and how she uses it to increase student engagement and energize her lessons. Karyn is in her third year of teaching and is currently pursuing her certificate to teach English Language Learners. Each day her students’ excitement about learning inspires her to provide them with an enriching educational environment. This summer, I decided to work on getting a subscription to Brain Pop Jr. through Donors Choose.  Within twenty days my project was funded and we were looking at starting the school year with Brain POP Jr. My students quickly learned that the catchy BrainPOP Jr. theme song meant Annie and Moby would be teaching them something new and making them laugh. The first thing I do when using BrainPOP Jr. for a lesson, is for us to watch the movie. We watch the movie through one time to get started. Then, we watch it a second time, stopping the movie on the blinking pause sign and answering the questions that come up on Annie’s notebook. Sometimes, I will have students write their answers… Read the Rest»

Guest Blog: Grant Funds for BrainPOP Jr.

March 14, 2011

Kassie Jackson is a 1st grade teacher for the Great Falls School District in Great Falls, MT. She recently received her masters in technology and is passionate about engaging her students with technology. She shares her experience of leveraging a local grant opportunity to enrich her students’ lives with BrainPOP Jr. I am so excited to bring technology into the schools and into my classroom. I believe that technology is the key to engaging students these days. Most of my students in my school come from low income families and don’t have computers at home. I think it’s important for my students to use technology every day. Every lesson I teach, I try to incorporate technology with my interactive white board. I recently came across BrainPop Jr. when I was looking for an introduction video for place value. During the video, I noticed all my students were engaged and loved it!  I instantly wanted my students to have access to BrainPop Jr., as it is a great resource for the classroom.  Although there are many free resources available through BrainPOP, I needed additional funds to obtain the full subscription. I came across a grant opportunity with our local TV station… Read the Rest»

Guest Blog: Success with DonorsChoose

January 30, 2011

Karyn Keenan is a recent recipient of a donorschoose grant. She teaches 2nd grade in Chicago, and she’s chock full of great ideas! Thanks, Karyn. This summer I decided to work on getting a subscription to Brain Pop, Jr. through Donors Choose.  Within twenty days my project was funded and we were looking at starting the school year with BrainPOP Jr. My students quickly learned that the catchy BrainPOP Jr. theme song meant Annie and Moby would be teaching them something new and making them laugh. The first thing I do when using BrainPOP Jr. for a lesson is for us to watch the movie. We watch the movie through one time just for watching. Then we watch it a second time, stopping the movie on the blinking pause sign and answering the questions that come up on Annie’s notebook. Sometimes I will have students write their answers to these questions on an exit slip. Other times I will pick a squirmy member of class to be in charge of pushing the pause button on our SMART board. Whenever we watch a movie I use the closed captioning feature. Closed captioning and viewing the movie twice helps my students, especially… Read the Rest»

I3 Grant News

August 27, 2010

Congratulations to eMINTS on not only receiving an I3 Grant, but also on being named a Highest Rated Applicant. BrainPOP is partnering with the University of Missouri eMINTS National Center and New Franklin R-I School District on an I3 (Investing in Education) Grant The eMINTS Validation Project will examine the efficacy of eMINTS professional development programs on the achievement of high-need rural Missouri middle school students. We’re rooting for you, Ms. K! Keep us posted! Have you had success with funding BrainPOP with a grant? Share tips and experiences below! We’re also working on building up our funding resources. Great Grant Groups!

February 4, 2010

Visit My Grant Wrangler I just received the latest newsletter from GrantWrangler, and thought this was well worth passing along. They’ve added a few new features that I thought were brilliant.  With Groups, not only can you join existing groups related to your position, but also invites you to create a group for your school. Discussions allow you to ask around for grant resources, success stories, etc. You’re now also able to post videos about your grant, sharing success stories or information. Seems like a smart way to put social networking to good use! Got a success story for writing a BrainPOP grant? Please share it, along with any tips you may have.
