{"synopsis":"Around 1500 years ago, explorers from eastern Polynesia crossed thousands of miles of open ocean, discovering the Hawaiian Islands. They established a civilization with a rigid class system, elaborate athletic competitions, advanced farming and fishing techniques, and the iconic hula dance. Then, in 1810, King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian islands into a single kingdom. It lasted until it was overthrown in 1893 by a group of businessmen, who pushed for Hawaii to become an American territory. For many years, Hawaiian traditions were suppressed and even banned. But a 1970s revival brought many of them back, including the navigation techniques that brought the first Polynesian navigators to Hawaii.
