Accessibility Statement

BrainPOP is committed to building products that engage, excite, and challenge every child in every way they learn — and to making those products accessible to all students. We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA and Section 508 standards, and we continuously work to improve accessibility across BrainPOP®, BrainPOP Jr.®, BrainPOP ELL®, and BrainPOP Science™. Our goal is to meet or exceed these standards across BrainPOP products and services.

BrainPOP Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT)

BrainPOP's VPATs detail our compliance with Revised 508 Standards and WCAG 2.1 AA. Download our latest per-product VPATs below:

BrainPOP Accessibility Highlights

The following are examples of how BrainPOP products support accessibility and WCAG compliance.

Site Navigation

  • All navigation is clear and predictable.

  • Each page includes a skip to main content option that lets users bypass the main navigation and go directly to the content.

Text

  • All text is written at an appropriate reading level

  • All site pages include an HTML language tag

Multimodal Response

  • Several BrainPOP features include multimodal response options so students can answer by writing, drawing, or recording their voices.

Audio Descriptions

  • Available in BrainPOP (grades 3-8) and BrainPOP Jr. (grades K-3) movies

  • Provide additional narration of critical visual elements, including action, characters, scene changes, on-screen text, and other visual content, to support students who are blind or have low vision

Microsoft Immersive Reader (Read more)

Microsoft Immersive Reader (MIR) is an integration tool that helps improve the reading and accessibility for all learners inside BrainPOP’s movies and learning activities. MIR is featured inside BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr, and BrainPOP Science and includes features such as

  • Line Focus: A built-in “reading ruler” lets students select how many lines of text they want to see at one time.

  • Text Personalization: Change text color, font, and background color; enlarge text (which shortens line length); and increase line, word, and letter spacing to reduce crowding.

  • Grammar Options: Dividing words into syllables supports students as they sound out new or challenging words. They can also highlight and label parts of speech.

  • Read Aloud: A text-to-speech option that students can speed up or slow down, highlights words as they are read, helping students follow along at their own pace.

  • Picture Dictionary: Click a word to view a picture or hear its pronunciation. Combine with Read Aloud to support reading and comprehension.

  • Translation: View translations to over 45 languages, and easily toggle between the translation and original text.

Screen Readers and Browsers

For screen reader and keyboard users, we recommend navigating BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr., and BrainPOP ELL with:

  • Chrome (latest version) with VoiceOver

  • Firefox® (latest version) with NVDA

  • Safari® (latest version) with VoiceOver

We suggest browsing our sites with VoiceOver, with Quick Nav set to ON. We suggest using a computer instead of a mobile device for a more accessible experience.

Our Commitment

BrainPOP's accessibility improvement is a continuous, organization-wide effort. Our ongoing commitments include:

  • Dedicated Accessibility Program: BrainPOP maintains a cross-functional accessibility working group that includes representatives from Product, Engineering, Content, Legal & Compliance, and Customer Experience. This group meets regularly to review progress, prioritize remediation, and respond to user feedback.

  • Regular Auditing: We conduct periodic accessibility audits of our platform using a combination of automated testing tools (including Axe and Lighthouse) and manual testing with users who rely on assistive technologies. Findings from these audits are tracked and prioritized in our product roadmap.

  • Inclusive Design Practices: New features and content are designed and reviewed with accessibility requirements built in from the start. Our product and engineering teams follow established accessibility checklists before releasing any new functionality.

  • Third-Party Vendor Standards: BrainPOP evaluates third-party vendors' and tools' accessibility practices as part of our procurement and compliance process. Vendors are expected to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, and accessibility requirements are included in relevant vendor agreements.

  • Annual Review Cycle: This Accessibility Statement is reviewed and updated at least annually, or sooner when significant platform changes occur, or new audit findings are addressed.

We welcome feedback about the accessibility of BrainPOP. If you experience any barriers, encounter content that is not fully accessible, or would like to request accessible alternatives, please reach out to us at accessibility@brainpop.com
